Speech at the Victory Day Reception

İnan Özyıldız 30.08.2012
Distinguished Guests, Dear Colleagues, Friends of Turkey,

Today, we are proudly celebrating the 90th anniversary of theVictory Day, a milestone in our history and I have the pleasure to welcome you on this occasion.

The victory that our heroic army won under the command of Mustafa Kemal was a turning point in the Turkish war of independence. This victory, in 1922, paved the way for the liberation of the Turkish territory and the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

On this important day, I would like to emphasize the role played by our military in that decisive moment. We are proud of the Turkish Armed Forces for their prowess, audacity, discipline and achievements.

Excellencies, Dear Guests,

During the last two years, we have witnessed in our region the opening of a unique window of opportunity for a transition towards pluralistic systems that will guarantee basic freedoms and fundamental rights for every segment of the societies.

In this new context, we believe that the preservation of Lebanon’s stability and security is of utmost importance. Despite all the problems, we are hopeful to see that forces uniting the country are still far stronger than the force pulling it to the opposite directions.

Turkey and Lebanon share deep historical bonds and a common vision for the region. Strengthening political stability in Lebanon will provide a better environment for the enhancement of our relations.

As part of our efforts in protecting the stability of Lebanon, we have been participating in the UNIFIL since 2006. An engineering unit has been contributing to the demarcation work of the Blue Line as well as to other infrastructure works in the UNIFIL zone. Turkey has also a continuous presence in the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force.

Turkey is fully committed to the success of the UNIFIL which plays a crucial role in ensuring peace and stability in Southern Lebanon and along the Blue Line.

Apart from their cooperation within UNIFIL, the military relations between Turkey and Lebanon have reached a new stage by the entry into force of the agreement on the “Training, Technical and Scientific Cooperation in the Military Field”. Turkey fully supports the strengthening of the role and capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces as a national institution.

Excellencies, Dear Guests,

Today I have to express our deep concern for our two citizens who have been abducted in Beirut two weeks ago. Our thoughts are with them. We hope to see them liberated as soon as possible. We believe that such acts do not serve any purpose and jeopardize not only human lives but also internal peace and relations between countries.

In this regard, I would like to thank the Lebanese authorities for their firm stand on this issue and their continuous efforts in order to ensure the release of our citizens.

We are also deeply concerned for the eleven Lebanese held hostage in Syria. I have to re-emphasize that Turkey continues to exert pressure and do its utmost to contribute to the release of our Lebanese brothers. We were relieved by the return of one of the hostages last week. We hope to see all the abducted Lebanese back in their country as early as possible.

Before concluding, allow me to address briefly in Turkish to the Turkish community present here:

Distinguished Guests, Dear Friends,

Thank you again for being with us this evening on this very special celebration.
