Address of H.E İnan Özyıldız on the occassion of Second Turkish Film Festival in Lebanon, 15.03.2012

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Colleagues, Dear Guests,

Welcome to the second edition of the Turkish Film Festival in Lebanon.

I am very happy to see that the Turkish Film Festival is taking its course to become a traditional event, which is bringing Turkey and Lebanon closer.

Last year, the first festival has been successful by creating a great amount of interest among the experts, as well as the public. Encouraged by this experience, the organizers decided to expand the outreach of the festival this year, through special screenings in Tripoli and Saida, following the conclusion of the week in Beirut.

Turkish cinema has been widely acclaimed in recent years for the number of films produced and the audience it has reached both domestically and worldwide. Technical quality of artistic productions and the budgets allocated to these films have shown a remarkable improvement as well.
In parallel, our films continue to receive many international awards. The opening film of the festival, “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia”, is the co-winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. The producer of this movie, Mrs. Zeynep Özbatur, who is with us tonight, is a well-known name in international film production. She is the winner of the fourth edition of the European Co-Production Award given by the European Film Academy in 2010.

Our film tonight is longer than usual. It is a thriller whose main characters are a doctor and a prosecutor in a small town in Anatolia. It is also a metaphysical “road movie” about life, death and the limits of knowledge. It was directed by the Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who in recent years has emerged as one of the consistently most exciting directors on the international scene.
We are pleased to see such a valuable combination of works of art and artists reaching the Lebanese audience, who we know to have high expectations when it comes to art.

To conclude, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the İzmir Cinema Association and the Metropolis Empire Sofil Cinema for their work in organizing this festival and congratulate them for their excellent cooperation.

I am confident that this festival will be another step that will contribute to the enhancement of cultural exchanges between Turkey and Lebanon.
